The government aligns itself with US policy against Cuba

27 July 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Anastasiades government yesterday chose to co-sign a US State Department statement issued against Cuba. The statement represents a new attempt by the US to interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, and the Cypriot Government chose to be one of only 20 of the 200 states around the world to align itself with the US policy against Cuba. AKEL denounces the statement and the government’s action to co-signing it.

What should be concerning the international community in relation to Cuba is the need for the US to comply with the repeated – almost unanimous – Resolutions approved by the UN General Assembly calling for an end to the 62-year inhumane US economic, trade and financial blockade imposed on Cuba.

At the same time, AKEL points out to the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the interests of our country and people demand that a foreign policy should be pursued based on principles and international law, which should deepen mutually beneficial relations with all the states of the world and not to turn – on the demand of others – against states that have consistently and always support Cyprus and its struggle.
