The genocide in Gaza continues with the same intensity and brutality

Our wish and hope is that the de-escalation of the Israel-US war with Iran will not prove to be temporary but will pave the way for a return to diplomacy and dialogue. AKEL emphasises that developments reaffirm the urgency and importance of the demand for the entire Middle East to be declared a nuclear-free  zone as well as of other weapons of mass destruction, a goal that the Cypriot parliament also supported with a unanimous resolution adopted back in 2014.  However, this goal is hampered by Israel’s insistence on not joining the UN Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and on maintaining a nuclear arsenal, with the backing of the West.

At the same time, AKEL points out that no one should forget for a moment that the genocide in Gaza continues with the same intensity. The daily massacres of dozens of civilians at humanitarian aid distribution points reveal the barbarity of the Israeli war machine and prove Israel’s real objectives. The expansion of the occupation of Gaza and the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians from their land was and remains the goal of Netanyahu’s far-right regime, which it is implementing with atrocities unprecedented in modern humanity. The immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and the imposition of an arms embargo on Israel are the minimum measures that the EU should have decided on long ago.
