The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL met with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, had a meeting today with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Cyprus, Liu Yantao, who was accompanied by members of the Embassy PRC. Stefanos Stefanou was accompanied by Nikos Ioannou, member of the Central Secretariat of the Party and Vera Polycarpou, Head of International Relations and European Policy of the C.C. of AKEL.

During the meeting an exchange of views took place on the international situation and the need to find solutions and ways of cooperation within the framework of international law and the Charter of the United Nations was stressed.  It was also underlined that the efforts of the international community must be aimed at serving the interests of the peoples in order to ensure development and prosperity and peace.

Stefanos Stefanou informed the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China about AKEL’s concerns regarding the current situation surrounding the Cyprus problem, stressing in particular that the ongoing stalemate increases the dangers for Cyprus. He thanked Ambassador Liu Yantao for the PRC’s consistent stance based on principles on the Cyprus problem, as well as for the role played by the PRC from its position as a permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations.

Satisfaction was also expressed at the continued development of Cyprus-China inter-state relations and exchanges, as well as for the relations between AKEL and Communist Party of China, and the desire for their further development was also confirmed.
