The formation of the Presidium of GUE/NGL

guengl-logoThe Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left today unanimously agreed to the election and formation of the Presidium of the Group for the next 2.5 years. Gabi Zimmer from the Left party of Germany was re-elected President of the Group. Neoklis Sylikiotis assumes one of three positions of Vice-President of the Group, reaffirming the important role played by the Party within the Group and the trust of the other parties of the Left towards AKEL. The other two positions of Vice-President were assumed by Malin Björk from the Left Party of Sweden (member of Nordic Green Left) and Patrick Le of the Left Front of France.

During the session of the Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left a document was approved which lays the foundations of the functioning of the Group for next mandate of the European Parliament. The document reaffirms the political context and confederal character of the Group on the basis of which the cooperation of the parties of the left will be ensured, in the Group for the coming years. Furthermore, the document also sets out the new leadership structure of the Group, through its Bureau (President and 3 Vice-Presidents) which will represent the instrument of collective action, work, guidance and representation of the Group.

The GUE/NGL Group also unanimously agreed to a proposal to assert the post of Vice-President of the European Parliament with the candidacy of SYRIZA MEP, Demetris Papadimoulis.

The deliberations of the plenary session of GUE/NGL Group will continue in the coming days with a view to taking decisions on other matters too relating to the formation and establishment of the Group and the participation of the MEP’s in Parliamentary Committees and Delegations of the European Parliament.
