The DISY-DIKO-ELAM trio is calling the shots at the expense of democratic institutions and the country
13 June 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The backroom deals between DISY, DIKO, and far-right ELAM over the issue of the Chairs of the Parliamentary Committees follow what unfolded with regards the election for the Speaker of the House of Representatives. This is had to do with wrangling, the serving of petty-party agendas, and the normalization of the far right at the expense of democratic institutions and parliamentarianism—but above all, to the detriment of the country.
AKEL reiterated the appeal it had issued to all the forces of the democratic spectrum to adopt the approach followed in the European Parliament and other national parliaments towards the far right: namely, to isolate the far-right and reject any compromise with it in principle.
Nevertheless, not only did this not happen, but the DISY-DIKO-ELAM trio imposed their will arbitrarily, stripping AKEL of the chairmanship of the Parliamentary Environment Committee that it was entitled to and handing it over to ELAM, a party that, among other things, denies the very existence of the climate crisis. They also handed over the chairmanship of the Defence Committee to the ELAM leadership, whose only connection to defence, as is well known, is rhetorical—that is, the nationalistic exploitation of the issue for electoral gain.
It is clear that DISY and DIKO are refusing to isolate the far-right because they need it to fulfil their plans for the 2028 Presidential elections, but also to impose their policies in Parliament. Conversely, of course, ELAM willingly plays its role as a reserve force for DISY and DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos, whilst always keeping the backdoor to the Presidential Palace open.
AKEL stands against the ongoing normalization of the far right by DISY-DIKO and against these petty-political deals. AKEL marches and acts with transparency and clean hands, on the path of democracy, in the service of society.
