AKEL’s Parliamentary Spokesperson and Co-Chair of the United European Left group in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Giorgos Loucaides departs for Turkey today heading a five-member delegation.

As part of the visit, which will last until June 16, the delegation will hold a series of meetings in Diyarbakır and Ankara, with a particular focus on contacts with the leadership and leading officials of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), including the party’s co-chairperson, Tulay Hatimoğulari, as well as with the elected Municipal Co-chairs who have been removed from their posts and replaced by appointed state officials.

The delegation will also hold meetings with representatives of civil society, human rights organizations, and the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey.

The European Left and AKEL reaffirm their steadfast solidarity with the democratic and progressive forces in Turkey and their support for the struggles for democracy and respect for human rights in the country, as well as for regional peace.
