The dilemma on the 24 May is becoming clear – Either with society, or with the banks and the 1% of the super-rich
Statement by AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
4 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Twenty days before the 24 May parliamentary elections, the dilemma facing the Cypriot people is becoming increasingly clear. Either AKEL will be strengthened so that society can benefit tomorrow, or the banks and the country’s 1% of the super-rich will once again come out on top through the political parties that serve and cater to them.
The message is quite clear. Enough is enough. Enough of the majority of society being suffocated at the same time as an elite is accumulating increasing profits and super-profits because it has the government and the majority of the political parties at its service. The time has now come for the Left to emerge stronger, for AKEL—which dares in practice to take action, both inside and outside Parliament—to confront the powerful economic interests, the unhindered activities of the banks and hedge funds, along with the arrogance of the establishment and those in power.
AKEL is the force that both wants and can defend society: working people, households, the middle strata and pensioners. With a 100 year history of struggle as a guarantee. With the power which the people themselves and society itself hold in their hands.
