The debate on NATO membership runs counter to the interests of Cyprus
President Christodoulides confirmed today that his goal is the accession of Cyprus to NATO and that he is promoting this step by step. But he should answer the Cypriot people, what are his choices based on and where are they leading?
– How is the solution to the Cyprus problem served by the President’s policy of NATO membership? How will the Cyprus solution be adopted by the UN Security Council if it envisages one way or another the accession of Cyprus to NATO? How is the President’s declaration to continue negotiations on the basis of the Guterres Framework and what it provides for the security aspect consistent with the announcements on NATO?
– How can Cyprus fortify itself against Turkey by joining NATO, when the Alliance, according to Article 5 of its Statute, does not intervene in disputes and conflicts between its member states? It is precisely on this argument that NATO does not protect Greece from Turkey.
– How will Cyprus be geopolitically strengthened when our country’s attachment to NATO breaks up our relations with powerful states of the world, permanent members of the UNSC, which have many times in the past given us support?
– How is the security of our country enhanced in the troubled region in which it finds itself, when the government turns Cyprus into an “outpost of the West” and thus makes us a target?
– Does the government understand the difference between building alliances and mortgaging the country to foreign armies and foreign interests?
What the President says about Cyprus and NATO can only damage the resumption of negotiations and the prospect of a solution, but also the very security of our country.
The President may be trying, through communication, to gild his choice of foreign policy of the country, but it is still short-sighted, dangerous and contrary to the interests of our country and our people.
