The Attorney General’s statement calling the Auditor General to order is incomprehensible

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson S.Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th October 2020, Nicosia

The statement by which the Attorney General calls the Auditor General to order is incomprehensible. Both the Attorney General and the Auditor General are appointed independent officials with specific competences and powers which are set out in the Constitution. For the Auditor General to call to order is to say the least inappropriate and ill-advised.

Also inappropriate and unwise for the government, together with the Attorney General, to prevent the Audit Office of the state from exercising its powers and to investigate possible embezzlement of public money or lost revenues. This is precisely what the Auditor General has started to do in relation to the “golden” passports and the government is blocking him fearing the findings of the investigation.

The impression is increasingly being formed that the constant invocation of the investigative committee that was appointed by the Attorney General given the involvement of the Ministerial Council, which should be investigated as a matter of priority since it was the body approving the final decisions on the naturalizations granted by way of excpetion, acts as an alibi to prevent any further investigation or scrutiny.
