The attempt to equate communism and Nazism is unhistoric

28 November 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL MEP Niyazi Kizilyurek today announced in the European Parliament’s Education and Culture Committee that he is withdrawing his name as rapporteur for the report on “European Historical Consciousness” following the insistence by the right-wing and far-right political groups to include references equating communism with Nazism. Niyazi Kizilyurek’s decision was imperative, given that the references that were imposed in his Report distort its scientific and value-based background.

The attempt to equate communism with Nazism is a vulgar and unhistoric propaganda position which for some years now has been institutionalised by the EU itself. The association of an ideology centred on serving people and their needs with the inhumane ideology of fascism is by definition unfounded that serves evident considerations. This equation does not even constitute any kind of critical evaluation of existing socialism, but of anti-communism which, among other things, has always been the vehicle of the fascist far-right. Furthermore, it is even more provocative since the Political Groups of the European People’s Party and the Conservatives, who are cooperating with the far-right in numerous European countries, portray themselves as the guardians of democracy and historical consciousness.

AKEL denounces all forms of equation between communism and Nazism and the falsification of European history, tools that pave the way for the far-right which threatens democratic freedoms, peace, human rights and social achievements in Europe.
