In his circular on Christmas Day itself, the Archbishop chose to once more spread intolerance instead of love, heartlessness rather than solidarity.
This is not the first time the Head of the Church of Cyprus is provoking with his discourse. We remind everyone, and the Archbishop himself, that extremist and divisive political views are a criminal offense. Moreover, the Archbishop’s provocative statements are an insult to the Church, Christian values and, in general, to our culture.
Keeping silent about what the Archbishop frequently unacceptably states is an act of complicity which in the end lead to encouragement. Those circles and forces who retransmit what the Archbishop says as a Gospel, such as the state television channel, but also those who tolerate these views and haven’t the courage to criticize the Archbishop, also bear a responsibility – among them unfortunately the outgoing President of the Republic, his government and other political figures. Other than that, we are supposedly living in a modern, European and bicommunal country.
What is certain is that the Archbishop’s poisoned views heard yesterday do not represent all those who believe in love and solidarity, in the true messages of Christmas.
