The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met the leadership of the Pancyprian Organization of large family members (POP).

During the meeting, the President of POP Dinos Olympios analysed the organisation’s demands, the main ones being the reinstatement of the 9% child allowance which was cut in 2013 and the reinstatement of students of large families as dependent children.

St. Stefanou said that AKEL fully understands the need to promote the specific demands made by the Organisation and expects the Government to submit to Parliament bills relating to the relevant announcements made by the Government last October.

In addition, he noted AKEL’s long-standing support for the demands of large family members and referred to the Party’s basic positions as analysed in the recent AKEL “Young Parents First” campaign. Among other things, S.Stefanou referred to AKEL’s positions on the recognition of five member families to the status of large families, the reinstatement of students of large family members as dependent children, the extension of the mother’s allowance for all large member families and the need for the pricing policy for electricity and water supply to take into account the needs of large member families. Finally, St. Stefanou referred to the need for the tax reform to take into account the composition of families.

The meeting was attended on behalf of POP, its President Dinos Olympios, Argyris Argyrou Organizing Secretary and Argyris Hadjichristodoulou First Officer of the Large Family Members Office. The AKEL delegation included S.Stefanou, Andros Kafkalias, AKEL Political Bureau member, MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Affairs Committee and Marina Savva, member of the C.C.
