Statements of Neoklis Sylikiotis, Vice-President of GUE/NGL and member of the Political Bureau of AKEL to “HARAVGI”

“The possibility is given to the Group to function more effectively, united and collectively in order to struggle against the policies of neoliberal tough austerity, the dismantling of the welfare state and the militarization of the European Union”,
stressed Neoklis Sylikiotis in statements made to “HARAVGI” newspaper when called upon to comment on the new working structure of the GUE/NGL in the European Parliament. With the decisions taken he added, “We can project even more effectively our proposal for another Europe of working people; a Europe of the peoples, peace, solidarity and equality.”

Furthermore, N. Sylikiotis also pointed out that AKEL contributed constructively through a joint initiative undertaken together with the Portuguese Communist Party and the “United Left” of Spain, submitting a document with regards the functioning of the GUE/NGL Group. “The collective Presidium/Bureau will coordinate the activity of the Group and represent it. In line with the confederal character of the Group decisions are taken by the Bureau of the Group where all the Parties-Delegations participate with one representative. Within this framework it was made possible to have a procedure in place for achieving consensus and collectivity in action and work”, added the MEP of AKEL.
