Statements by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou after yesterday’s meeting with the President of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance Alexis Tsipras

16 September 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

During the meeting, which took place in a very friendly atmosphere, we discussed a wide range of issues of interest to Cyprus, Greece, the region, Europe and the whole world and the need to find democratic solutions to the problems that exist, in favour of peace and cooperation on the basis of international law.

Of course, an important problem that concerns both Cyprus and Greece and which was the main subject of our discussion is the Cyprus problem, which unfortunately is at a very critical juncture, with permanent partition threatening Cyprus and our people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

We stressed the need to find a way to break the deadlock and counter Turkey’s whole provocative and dangerous stand, which is trying to divert the Cyprus solution away from the resolutions of the UN on Cyprus and lead to a two state solution, which is a starting point for new adventures for our people and homeland. We agreed that our response must be consistency and insistence on the solution within the framework of the resolutions of the UN for the solution of bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality as outlined by the relevant resolutions of the UN.

The proposal that has been submitted by AKEL has been referred to and discussed which seeks to create momentum to unleash forces for a resumption of the negotiations that have been stalled since July 2017 after the failure of the Crans Montana conference on Cyprus, for negotiations to be resumed from where they had remained, preserving the negotiating body of work acquis recorded as expressed through the convergences and by negotiating on the Framework tabled by the Secretary General of the UN.

We agreed to continue our contacts for the benefit of both parties and of the struggles we are waging for the peoples, for the working people, for the rights of our countries.
