Prodromou staying on at the Education Ministry is the personal choice of President Anastasiades

Personal choice of Mr. Anastasiades

The issue of art-educator Giorgos Gavriel’s persecution by the Anastasiades government has not closed. All the more so after yesterday’s Ministerial Council decision that found the artist – teacher guilty, but as a favor did not prosecute him because of the strong reactions of society and cultural organisations/agencies.

This confirms that Mr. Prodromos’ obsessions are nothing but a symptom of the overall outlook of a reactionary backward-looking government – with fixations reminiscent of other dark eras. The fact that Mr. Prodromou, with all that is weighing heavily on him, remains in his place as Education Minister is a personal choice made by Mr. Anastasiades, a choice which is evidently supported by the ruling DISY party as well.

In any case, on 4 October Mr. Prodromou must give explanations before the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee since AKEL has tabled the issue for discussion. He will have to provide explanations as to why in our country, in 2021, the government is persecuting the freedom of the Arts.
