Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou after the meeting with a Communist Party of Greece delegation

29 March 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

“We have welcomed with great pleasure and love the delegation of the KKE, led by the General Secretary of the Party, com. Demetri Koutsoumba here at our offices.

We had an excellent meeting as always, a comradely, fraternal meeting, as is the relationship between AKEL and the KKE.

Relations which go back a long way in history and are characterised by comradeship, fraternal and internationalist solidarity, because admittedly the Communist Party of Greece is a party that has always stood with consistency by the struggles of our people for freedom and vindication.

The visit takes place in a year that marks fifty years since the twin crimes committed against Cyprus and our people. Namely the coup d’état of the Greek junta and EOKA B and the barbaric Turkish invasion that followed the coup. In this context, we recalled both the history and the NATO conspiracies against Cyprus that led to this crime and to a situation that has prevailed since then, that is to say de facto partition of the Turkish occupation, which undermines the security of our people and country and the wider region. A region that is constantly plagued by conflicts and wars, especially now that a crime is being committed by the State of Israel, the far-right government of Netanyahu, against the Palestinians, with what is happening in the Gaza Strip. Both parties have stressed the need for peace to prevail, for an end to Israel’s murderous attack on the Palestinians and for peace and international law to prevail in our region.

We also discussed the current situation in the region in general and for both our countries, but also the need to resolve the Cyprus

problem, because the passage of time without a solution to the Cyprus problem, which will bring liberation and reunification, will lead us to partition, which, apart from being disastrous, it will also be dangerous for the present and the future of our country.

I would like to thank comrade Demetris Koutsoumbas for this meeting. As always with the KKE we have an open-hearted and continuous dialogue and of course this continuous dialogue will continue.”
