Statement by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A.Kyprianou after meeting a delegation from ‘Left Wing’

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th June 2020, Nicosia

We had a very constructive meeting with a delegation from the ‘Left Wing’. During our meeting, we exchanged views on the situation in our country after the pandemic. We expressed our concern about the impact on the economy and the problems that will be generated in the social sector. We share the same concerns about the fact that human lives are unfortunately being calculated by the current government in a very cheap way. It is a shame that Cypriot society has lost its human approach, an element that always characterized it.

Of course, we also discussed and exchanged views on the top issue that concerns our people’s survival in the country of its birth, namely the Cyprus problem. We expressed our common concerns about the situation on the ground. AKEL’s view is that the President of the Republic must from now onwards prepare the initiatives he will undertake immediately after the ‘electoral’ process in the Turkish Cypriot community immediately afterwards, on the basis of the joint statement of Berlin and the statement by the UN Secretary General. He should take initiatives for the immediate resumption of negotiations, aiming at the solution of the Cyprus problem as soon as possible.

Equally important however is that he should prepare public opinion all through this period for the need to resume negotiations and for a solution to the Cyprus problem. He should explain the dangers if and provided that we don’t manage to resolve the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN Resolutions, the High-Level Agreements, international law and the principles on which the EU is founded. He should convince the people to support an effort that must be resumed after the ‘electoral’ process in the Turkish Cypriot community.

I want to thank my friend Themos and his associates for the very good and constructive discussion we have had. I assure them that AKEL will continue to work with consistency and steadfastness on the longstanding principles it sticks to, both with regards the Cyprus problem and on socio-economic and environmental issues.
