Statement by Christos Christofides, AKEL Political Bureau member on Guterres statement for resuming negotiations

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 22nd November 2020, Nicosia

The Greek Cypriot side’s goal must be the resumption of negotiations from the point where they had remained at Crans Montana, the confirmation of the convergences and talks on the basis of the Guterres Framework.

Any discussion about “new ideas” will allow the occupying power Turkey to officially put its objective for a partitionist solution and two states in Cyprus or the annexation of the occupied territories on the negotiating table. The only option before us is bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as this has been defined in the relevant Resolutions of the Security Council of the United Nations. Any further wandering will lead to the finalization of partition.

Within this framework, the UN Secretary General’s statement that the goal of the United Nations is the resumption of the talks from where they had left off at Crans Montana is moving in the right direction.
