Statement by AKEL MP Christos Christofias after the meeting of the Parliamentary Education and Culture Committee

19 January 2022

  • Our goal is to resolve major weaknesses in the bill establishing a Deputy Ministry of Culture

We have continued the article-by-article debate on the bill to establish a Deputy Ministry of Culture. As AKEL, in an organised manner and after serious preparation, we are submitting proposals for amending the bill, with the aim of covering its significant weaknesses. We are adamant on important issues such as the non-transfer of the Department of Antiquities, theatrical development, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and others.

We again called on the Ministry of Culture to at long last submit to the next plenary, an organizational chart with the structure of the new Deputy Ministry, so that we can hope that the preconditions will be created in the future to support culture, its institutions and agencies/organisations in a substantive way.
