Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on Tatar’s statements and the Cyprus problem
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26th October 2020, Nicosia
AKEL denounces the actions and statements of Turkish Vice-President Fuat Oktay during his illegal visit to the occupied territories, as well as the statements of the new Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in favor of a two-state solution to the Cyprus problem.
Tatar’s remarks were made at a time when the UN Secretary General is examining the possibility of undertaking a new effort on the Cyprus problem. The positions expressed by Ersin Tatar torpedo this effort and the possibility of resuming talks within the agreed framework.
This is precisely why the Greek Cypriot side must be extremely consistent, very clear and convincing in its readiness for a resumption of talks as specified by the UN and its Resolutions: the resumption of negotiations from the point at which they had remained at Crans Montana, on the basis of the Guterres Framework and the convergences that have been achieved.
The only way, either for the Cyprus problem to proceed within the agreed framework or for the Turkish position in favor of abandoning what has been agreed to be exposed internationally, is for the talks to resume.
AKEL points out in every direction that any abandonment of the goal of the reunification of our homeland and our people on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation and the search for partitionist and confederal solutions will mean a new cycle of insecurity and tensions in our country’s history. It will mean new adventures and new dangers for all our people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
