Erdogan’s inflammatory statements in favor of a two-state solution and his announcements on Varosha a gross provocation against Cyprus and its people

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 27th October 2020, Nicosia

Erdogan’s inflammatory statements in favor of a two-state solution and his announcements about Varosha constitute a gross provocation against Cyprus and its people, as well as contempt for international law and the Resolutions of the United Nations.

It is no coincidence that these statements and moves by the Turkish side are taking place at a time when the Secretary General of the UN is exploring the possibility to undertake a new effort on the Cyprus problem. In the face of the scenario that the Erdogan-Tatar duo wants to set up in order to change the basis for a solution to the Cyprus problem, the Greek Cypriot side is called upon to be consistent, convincing and very clear in its readiness for a resumption of the talks as suggested by the Secretary General of the UN and the Resolutions of the UN. The experience from the absence of negotiations and the three and a half years that have passed without movement on the Cyprus problem while Mustafa Akinci was at the helm of the Turkish Cypriots, must make everyone wiser.

The demand of Turkey and its crony in the occupied territories in favor of abandoning the goal of the reunification of Cyprus and the solution of federation, is rejected by every Cypriot on both sides of the barbed wire of division who wants a future of peace and security for our homeland and people. The only just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem is the termination of the occupation and division of our country, reunification on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as defined by the Resolutions of the UN.
