Special education among AKEL’s priorities

29 October 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, heading an AKEL delegation had a meetting on Wednesday afternoon with parent’s associations of children with disabilities, other organised bodies/agencies and academics.

The meeting discussed the many serious problems special education faces.

The parents stressed the urgent need and obligation of the state to implement a special unified education in schools and the right of every child to have access to education.

On his part, the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou stressed that these issues are very high on the Party’s policy agenda. AKEL has long ago submitted proposals on special education, which unfortunately the government has not taken into account.

In any case, AKEL will continue to exert pressure where and when necessary in order to resolve the problems that exist in special education.

At the meeting, the AKEL delegation also included the Head of the Education Affairs Bureau and Nicosia AKEL MP Christos Christofides and THE Head of the Social Policy Bureau Evanthia Savva.
