Speaking to the ‘Astra’ morning radio programme, the General Secretary of Andros Kyprianou underlined that the opening of checkpoints has to do with the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. He also said that Tatar and Ozerzay do not want a solution on the basis of the bi-zonal, bi-communal federation and that their political actions and behavior were aiming another solution to the Cyprus problem being formulated, stating that this stance was unacceptable and destructive.
Furthermore, A. Kyprianou also accused the government that it hasn’t demonstrated a willingness to work for the reopening of the checkpoints. He added that the verbal statements and declarations made by President Anastasiades and other government officials are not enough. If the government really wanted to create the preconditions for the reopening of the checkpoints he stressed, it should have taken many initiatives with Tatar and Ozerzay incurring political cost for their actions.
The General Secretary of AKEL also said that the Turkish side is planning the colonisation of the fenced-off city of Famagusta and such a move would be disastrous for the prospect of the reunification of Cyprus.
