Solidarity with Greece and the Greek people

AKEL expresses its support and solidarity with Greece and the Greek people who are suffering from the enormous and uncontrolled fires, which have been threatening human lives and destroying the country’s natural environment and property for days. We express our sorrow at the death of a volunteer firefighter.
The catastrophic fires in Cyprus, Greece and Turkey this summer leave behind dead people, huge areas of burnt forest and immense ecological destruction, which also raise concerns about the future of ecosystems in the region and the Mediterranean. Today, more than ever before, our people and all the peoples of our region need to demand a drastic increase in spending on environmental policy and forest protection, fire prevention infrastructures and on fire-fighting.
It is obvious that the sharp increase in fires in almost all continents around the world is linked to climate change and rising temperatures. The tackling of the environmental and ecological crisis demands active and effective international cooperation between the world’s states.
