Price increases existed in Cyprus even before the war in Ukraine
Statement by AKEL Political Bureau member and Head of the Economic Policy Charis Polycarpou
3 March 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Price increases and a high cost of living existed in Cyprus even before the war broke out in Ukraine. This is what the figures published yesterday by the European Statistical Office on inflation in the European Union reveal. Figures that unequivocally refute the estimates made by the Anastasiades-DISY government all the previous period, leaving society unprotected.
Today, the government ruling forces are hastily adopting proposals that AKEL had long ago submitted. However, the problem is expected to be far greater after the war. The economic consequences will affect the whole economy, but much more so the middle and low-income strata of society. That is precisely why it is even more imperative to have a comprehensive package of measures in place for the economy immediately.
AKEL has tabled a comprehensive package of proposals that can be implemented and implemented right away. We call on the government to immediately convene a meeting of the Council of Political Leaders to discuss measures and ways of addressing the consequences and problems that will arise in the economy and society.
