Meeting with the President of the Party of the European Left, Walter Baier

 

 

The Secretary General of the CC AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met today with the President of the Party of the European Left, Walter Baier.

During the meeting there was an exchange of views on the international situation and strong concern was expressed about developments.  The urgent need to end the war in Ukraine and to find a solution through diplomatic channels was stressed.  Opposition was expressed to EU decisions leading to armament and militarisation which is to the detriment of spending in the areas that society requires for peaceful development.

On the situation in the Middle East, all-round solidarity with the Palestinian people and the demand for an end to the genocide and recognition of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and on the 1967 borders was reiterated.

In the face of these challenges, cooperation between the left forces and unity of action is essential, through diversity with respect for the autonomy, independence and positions of each party.

The meeting was attended on the part of the EL by its coordinator Ismael Gonzalez, and on the part of AKEL by the Head of the International Relations and European Affairs Sector, Vera Polycarpou.
