President Anastasiades intervenes in the election campaign of his Party DISY
Statement by Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th May 2014, Nicosia
The President of the Republic is unfortunately refuting himself once again. When he was in opposition Mr. Anastasiades criticized the former President of the Republic Demetris Christofias of intervening in the election campaign in favour of AKEL, arguing that he was not behaving as President of all Cypriots.
Now that Mr. Anastasiades is himself President, not only is he participating in a number of campaign activities of the governing DISY party, but in addition to his statements he is attempting beforehand to present the results of the European elections as a prejudgement and vote of confidence in the government.
Citizens, especially the people of the Left, are therefore called upon to decide with their vote and behaviour if they will give the opportunity to DISY and the Anastasiades government to attempt to interpret the election results as a vindication of their decision in March 2013 to cut down Cypriots life and impoverish our people.
– As a reward for the brutal austerity policy implemented at the expense of pensioners and vulnerable groups of the population.
– To interpret the result as an endorsement of the selling-off of our national wealth, the profitable Semi-governmental organizations, the targeting of SME’s with the liberalisation of the shopping hours and the imposition of the socially unjust taxation of immovable property.
– Citizens will decide whether to give the opportunity to DISY and the government to exploit the election result to give the impression of being vindicated with regards the continuing efforts to redistribute the country’s wealth from the people for the benefit of big private interests, both domestic and foreign, who they consistently serve.
