Online meeting between AKEL and the Communist Party of China

Within the framework of the regular bilateral contacts between AKEL and the Communist Party of China, an online meeting was held on 24 November with the participation of delegations from both Parties.

The delegation of AKEL was headed by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou, and included the member of the Political Bureau and Secretariat Nikos Ioannou, and the Head of the International Relations and European Policy Sector of the C.C.  and member of the Central Committee, Vera Polycarpou. The delegation of the Communist Party of China was headed by the Deputy Minister of the International Relations Department of the C.C. Qian Hongshan, as well as the Director General and Deputy Director of the Western Europe Office of the Party Zhao Fei and Zhang Guanping, and the Political Advisor of the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus Wang Sheng.

On the part of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, referring to the situation on the Cyprus problem, expressing AKEL’s gratitude for China’s steadfast stand on the Cyprus problem, a fact of particular importance since the P.R. of China is a permanent member of the Security Council of the UN.  The General Secretary of AKEL reiterated AKEL’s principled position in support of the People’s Republic of China in combatting the attempts at intervention in its internal affairs and to create threats to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country. S.Stefanou congratulated the Communist Party of China on the successful holding of the 6th Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee, which set out the course for continuing the successful efforts to continuously develop the country, improve the living standards of the people and further strengthen China’s global role as a factor of stability and multilateral cooperation for peace.

The online meeting is part of the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus-China interstate relations.  On this occasion, mutual satisfaction was expressed for the level of relations and continuous development in all areas. In particular, the contribution of the two Parties to the efforts for the further development of interstate relations in the political, commercial and cultural fields, which is to the benefit of both peoples, was highlighted.

The two Parties agreed on the continuation and strengthening of bilateral relations and exchanges, as well as the exchange of visits when conditions permit.
