One by one DISY’s illusions are being shattered

 

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas on the subject of EastMed

The United States of America is withdrawing its support for the EastMed pipeline, for which the government of ruling DISY party has been staging fiestas in celebration and improvising a foreign policy pursuing the irredentist concept of the ‘Great Idea’ – ‘Megali Idea’. As could have been predicted from the very beginning, the pipeline was extremely complex in technical terms and very difficult to become economically viable. Nevertheless, the ruling DISY party was deliberately fostering illusions among the Cypriot people.

One by one, all these DISY illusions are being shattered. The Exclusive Economic Zone was not shielded (Note: as the government ruling forces were assuring). The opening of Varosha was not a “communication trick” (Note: as former Foreign Minister N.Christodoulides had suggested). The sanctions that were supposedly to have been imposed by the EU never materialised. And now the East Med plans have gone down the drain. Each time however, our country emerges damaged.

The silence of those responsible – N. Anastasiades, Averof Neophytou and N. Christodoulides – is deafening.
