Nikos Anastasiades remembered transparency belatedly

29 November 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Nicos Anastasiades remembered transparency belatedly. Up till now Mr. Anastasiades had not refuted the allegations made against him by a former advisor [Makarios Droushiotis] of his in three books he wrote. Now, under pressure from the initiative taken by Andreas Mavroyiannis who asked the Anti-Corruption Authority to investigate all the testimonies and allegations of Makarios Droushiotis, Mr. Anastasiades is also asking for an investigation to be carried out. The man who for ten years now has become synonymous with conflict of interest and the huge corruption in Cyprus, has decided that he wants investigations…

However, the silence of the two DISY presidential candidates, Averof Neofytou and Nikos Christodoulides, on the issue is deafening. Apologists and would-be continuers of a government steeped in corruption, they are condemned even now to defend Nicos Anastasiades. They are thus revealing where they will have the bar of morality and good governance if they come to power.

Andreas Mavroyiannis, with his initiative, has shown the way to a different ethos and style of governance. With transparency and accountability in practice. With public figures – starting with the first citizen of the state – being role models of integrity, and not models shaming the country all over the world.

AKEL calls on the Anti-Corruption Authority to carry out its work in full and to thoroughly investigate all the complaints, testimonies and allegations of the former adviser to the President of the Republic.
