N. Sylikiotis unanimously elected President of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Palestine

Statement of the Office of Neoklis Sylikiotis, AKEL MEP and GUE/NGL Vice-President

The Member of the European Parliament of AKEL and Vice-President of the European United Left-Nordic Green Left Confederal Group, N. Sylikiotis was unanimously elected yesterday afternoon to the position of President of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Palestine.

Upon assuming his duties, N. Sylikiotis stressed that coming from Cyprus, an island where International Law, as well as fundamental freedoms are flagrantly being violated, he knows the pain of occupation.

The AKEL MEP stated that he had no choice but to work with all his strength for the issue of Palestine. He also underlined that he will continue the good cooperation with all the members of the Delegation of the European Parliament for relations with Palestine so that the European Parliament should support the just struggle of the Palestinian people and exert the necessary pressure so as to lift the occupation, ensure all the rights of the Palestinians, for peace to prevail and to achieve a two-state solution.

It should be pointed out that N. Sylikiotis will lead the mission that will organize the Delegation to Palestine on 20-24th February. Within the framework of the mission, the MEP’s will deal particularly with the issue of the settlements. They will also visit refugee camps and meet with representatives of the Palestinian government, as well as with the Palestinian Legislative Council. Furthermore, the necessary arrangements have been made so that the MEP’s are also allowed to enter the Gaza Strip.
