Message of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou to the 28th Congress of the Turkish Cypriot Republican Turkish Party (CTP)

4 September 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

“Dear friends and comrades,

I convey the warm greetings of the C.C. of AKEL to the members, delegates and leadership of CTP on the occasion of the convening of your Congress. A Congress that is taking place in the midst of extremely adverse developments surrounding the Cyprus problem and dangers for stability on our island and the wider region.

Combatting the revival of nationalism-chauvinism and the unacceptable position for a two state solution or/and other novel ideas, we must continue our huge effort to convince that the only way for permanent peace, security and prosperity of Cyprus is the federal solution.

We are sure that the solution of the Cyprus problem will represent a proud victory in the arduous struggle in which you are at the forefront to safeguard the communal existence and will of the Turkish Cypriots.

It is an irrefutable fact that our two Parties have always been waging a common struggle for a solution of a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation, with political equality, as defined in the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. We believe that the convergences recorded by the two sides, during the Christofias-Talat period up to 2017, as well as the Guterres framework, give a specific content to the basis for a solution [of the Cyprus problem]. This is the basis on which the next negotiating effort must be based on, starting from the point where they [the talks] were interrupted at Crans Montana.

Despite the difficult conditions, our two Parties have a pivotal role to play – in cooperation with the progressive section of our communities – to contribute constructively both to the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem and to the need to mobilise all Cypriots in the struggle for a solution and the reunification of our common homeland.

We wish you every success in the deliberations of your Congress.

Yours sincerely,

Stefanos Stefanou, General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL.”
