9 August 2022

Today, AKEL MEP’s Giorgos Georgiou and Niyazi Kızılyürek had a meeting with the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus, Mr. Wang Sheng, following an invitation extended from the Chinese Embassy.

The AKEL MEP’s expressed their satisfaction with the good relations between AKEL and the Communist Party of China. They conveyed the gratitude of the Cypriot people for the principled support offered by the People’s Republic of China in relation to the Cyprus problem.

The meeting also discussed EU-China relations and the need for closer cooperation between the two. The issues standing in the way of deepening EU-China relations were discussed. It was stressed that these relations should be based on the principles of peaceful coexistence and reciprocity. Both the EU and China have an important role to play in consolidating peace.

Developments in Taiwan were also discussed. The AKEL MEP’s expressed their concern about the latest events taking place and the instability in the region. They stressed the importance of respecting international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and in particular the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. These are principles that make the respect, by all, for the “One China” policy imperative. They also conveyed AKEL’s position that peace must prevail through diplomatic means in order to enable the peoples to march on the path of development and cooperation.
