Meeting between the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL and a delegation of the Pancyprian Bar Association

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou had a meeting, which took place at AKEL’s central offices, with a delegation from the Pancyprian Bar Association yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 24 August 2021. The AKEL delegation, included the Head of the Legal Affairs Bureau of AKEL, MP Aristos Damianou, and Stavri Kalopsidiotou, member of the Bureau. The delegation of the Pancyprian Bar Association included its President Dr. Christos Clerides (President), Yiorgos Christofides (Vice President) and Nicolas Tsardelis (Secretary). During the meeting, a fruitful dialogue was held and views were exchanged on numerous issues, focusing on the reform of the Justice system and the modernization of the legislative framework with regards the fight against entanglement/interwoven interests and corruption.
The General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou stressed that the basic precondition of democracy itself is the rule of law, which citizens must feel exists. Consequently, he stressed, it is imperative that reforms in the field of justice really affect citizens and improve their lives significantly. Within this context, the efforts to achieve the greatest possible consensus around the bills must continue. In addition, he said, scrutiny, accountability and transparency must be ensured, which are essential elements for the proper functioning of the state and all the powers should be included in all the relevant reforms, as advocated by international best practices.
Finally, S.Stefanou reaffirmed that AKEL would continue to cooperate with the Pancyprian Bar Association towards achieving such progressive changes in the justice sector that would serve the whole of Cypriot society.
