Measures and actions should be within the framework of reason and proportionality

Statement by AKEL Parliamentary Representative Giorgos Loucaides

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th November 2020

The police, showing excessive zeal, proceeded completely unacceptably to arrest citizens for a post and an opinion they expressed. At the same time, the ban on outdoor gatherings of more than two people and the universal ban on demonstrations are disproportionate and unconstitutional measures.

AKEL reiterates that we must deal with the pandemic in a collective manner, showing respect for the measures, but the measures themselves, as well as the actions of the prosecuting authorities, must be within the framework of reason and proportionality that are befitting for a democratic state, which wants to be considered and indeed considered a state based on the rule of law.
