Joint Statement of g/c and t/c political parties and groups

“We unite forces for a federal solution”

In preparation to the forthcoming informal 5 + UN meeting on Cyprus, our political parties and groups join forces for the cause of the reunification of our country. In this respect, we are raising our voices for the urgent political steps that the leaders need to take in view of the 5+UN informal meeting in Geneva. At the same time we are looking forward to work harder within the society in order to inspire more Cypriots to embrace our vision.

We firmly believe that in view of the meeting in Geneva, the two leaders and all involved parties must engage in a constructive dialogue, with vision and commitment towards the ultimate cause which is the reunification of our country. Additionally, the sides must engage in a sincere dialogue aimed at the earliest resumption of formal negotiations for the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis. Negotiations must be meaningful and result oriented within the sense of urgency.

This goal is reachable provided that the procedure is based on the convergences reached by the two sides, the Joint Declaration of the two leaders (11th February 2014) and the Guterres Framework (30 June 2017), as outlined on the UN statement following the informal meeting in Berlin on the 25th of November 2019. The re-visiting of the already agreed issues will only complicate and delay the dialogue.

The ultimate goal must be to reach a strategic political agreement on a bi-zonal and bi-communal federal solution with political equality, in full line with all relevant UN resolutions and parameters.

We share the assessment of the UN Secretary General that the status quo is not static and that its perpetuation leads to the escalation of conceptual implications, detrimental to the achievement of lasting peace, security and prosperity in Cyprus. We are convinced that the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem will benefit the wider region in terms of stability and security.

With this occasion we reiterate our call upon the leaders to take the necessary joint measures and normalize movement across the crossings with the relevant health measures. In this direction, the two sides should work even further to combat all joint challenges related with the pandemic in terms of cooperation and solidarity.

Our parties and groups remain committed to support all efforts aimed at the preparation in both communities to the federal solution. In this direction we call upon our people and the civil society to support and attend the Joint mobilizations aiming to stress the need for reunification of the island that are taking place today at the center of Nicosia.
