It will be an institutional setback if the Attorney General and the Assistant Attorney General act as former Ministers of Nikos Anastasiades
Statement by Aristos Damianou, AKEL Member of Parliament
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th April 2021, Nicosia
The Attorney General and Assistant Attorney General have a self-evident conflict of interest in the handling of the conclusion of the Nikolatos Commission of Inquiry into the ‘golden’ passports scheme scandal, due to their previous capacity as Ministers in the Anastasiades-DISY government, a government that is under scrutiny for institutional entanglement/interwoven interests in the “golden passports” scandal.
That is precisely why the House of Representatives, seeking to ensure the minimum objective impartiality in the handling of the Inquiry’s findings, has called on the institution of the Attorney General to protect itself, by making the report public immediately and without elaboration. Instead of doing that, it has already been said that the Attorney General will blacken information and names before the report is made public.
Such an action would be unacceptable and represent a confirmation of the assessment that the government ruling forces do have things to hide. It will constitute an institutional setback if the Attorney General and the Assistant Attorney General act as former Ministers of Nikos Anastasiades, instead of acting as an independent institution that must defend the rule of law.
