The government’s catastrophic failure to manage the pandemic is self-evident

Statement of Aristos Damianou, AKEL Member of Parliament

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th April 2021, Nicosia

It takes political audacity on the part of the Anastasiades-DISY government, when they invoke the need for responsibility to be shown in their attempt to respond to what the General Secretary of AKEL has been substantiating.

Really, what responsible stand did the government ruling forces show when they said one thing yesterday in the National Council and then announced different measures immediately afterwards?

What responsibility did they show when they were praising each other for their handling of the pandemic and saying that we are doing well while the situation is critical?

What responsibility did they show when they solemnly declared a few days ago – the Anastasiades government and DISY President Averof Neophytou – that we are done with lockdowns, while now we are going into a third lockdown?

What responsibility did they show when they said that by June they will have vaccinated 70% of the population, while we are the last in Europe in the table of vaccinations?

Their utter failure to handle the pandemic is self-evident. And as always, its citizens who will pay the cost. That is precisely why they must for once take on their responsibilities and stop shifting the burden of responsibility for everything on the opposition and AKEL, even though they are the ones in power.
