Instead of blaming the people, the government should realise its responsibilities

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7th December 2020, Nicosia

Judging by results, it seems that the government’s recent measures to confront the pandemic are not working as well as they should. This is worrying and dangerous.

We had warned that contradictory and disproportionate measures, the selective strictness demonstrated, but also the government’s sloppiness would lead to the opposite results. The government should have foreseen that people’s trust in the effort is undermined when other measures and standards apply to the thousands of small businesses and shops whereas completely different measures are applied by the government with regards big department stores and churches.

Instead of blaming the people, the government should realise its own responsibilities, both in the preparation of the health system and its decisions. At the same time, AKEL sends a message to the government to listen to the cry of agony sent by the thousands of small businesses who have been dealt an exhaustive blow by these measures, but also by the suffocating pressure of rents, evictions and foreclosure
