The announcement on progress in the talks a positive development

With reservation in anticipation of the forthcoming official briefing to the Council of Political Leaders, AKEL considers the fact that the two leaders have announced progress in the negotiations as a positive development. The opposite or even stagnation in the negotiation procedure would correspondingly have been a negative development.

We also welcome and greet the decision for the establishment and functioning of a Technical Committee for education with the goal of our education system in both communities preparing our young people for a united, free and federal Cyprus, the common homeland of all its children.

AKEL recalls that systematic efforts were made by the Demetris Christofias government precisely within this context; efforts that unfortunately encountered unjust and devastating reaction, not just on the part of political forces.

AKEL will wholeheartedly support this effort, which must be promoted vigorously, without any deviations and contradictions and with full respect for the specific national characteristics and peculiarities of the two communities
