Imperialism is very much alive…Europe must decide: is it for peace or for war?

7 January 2020

Statement by Giorgos Georgiou, AKEL MEP

Urgent letter to Josep Borrel

Today twenty MEP’s from the Left Group (GUE/NGL) sent an urgent letter to Josep Borrel, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to express their deep concern over the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, Abu Mahdi Al – Muhandis and others by the US and the possible repercussions arising from these aggressive actions.

Executions that constitute acts of terrorism, given that the US, on the pretext that the executions were “strikes in defence aimed at preventing future attacks by Iran”, violated the national sovereignty of Iraq and are an aggressive action against Iran. In addition, Soleimani’s murder doesn’t meet the criteria of necessity and legality, while the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions Agnes Callamand has stated that the executions are illegal and violate international human rights law.

We have called on the EU’s High Representative to publicly reject the insane excuse of the Americans, while demanding at the same time that a strong initiative should be taken to de-escalate the situation.

Europe must decide whether it aligns itself with peace or the illegal and immoral bombings and war. For too long, the European Union has been complicit in the illegal actions committed by the United States. It’s time for Europe to take a clear stance and work sincerely for peace, without fear and discrimination.

These executions make our world less secure. The Middle East and eastern Mediterranean have been turned into a dangerous explosive area. The consequences of a possible crisis will be felt in Cyprus too.

The EU’s response at this point can be decisive on whether the situation will escalate further or be brought under control. At stake is the death of countless civilians and to even more people being uprooted as refugees.

Finally, no more drowning children for the sake of Trump’s pre-election considerations!

No more blood for oil!
