AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas on Andreas Mavroyiannis:

10 May 2022, ‘Astra’ radio

AKEL is continuing the procedure of discussing the candidacy of Andreas Mavroyiannis in the Party’s base organisations, calling on all its members and friends to express their views after hearing the rationale of the Central Committee’s recommendation, the AKEL’s press spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas told ‘Astra’ radio station.

G.Koukoumas reiterated that after the discussion in the Party’s base organisations, the Central Committee will subsequently formulate its recommendation to be put before the Pancyprian Congress, which will take the final decision on the candidate AKEL will support in the upcoming 2023 presidential election.

Regarding yesterday’s attack launched by Mr. Demetriades on Mr. Mavroyiannis and his response, Giorgos Koukoumas stressed that AKEL does not wish to see a confrontation.

At the same time, the AKEL Spokesperson underlined that for the Party to discuss the name of Mr. Mavroyiannis, AKEL had verified by every means that he is a man of acknowledged integrity and honesty. A. Mavroyiannis is an untarnished person who has nothing to hide, he pointed out.

He recalled that since last summer Andreas Mavroyiannis had written a letter requesting that his benefits and allowances be cut off.

The AKEL Spokesperson clarified that although AKEL does not share exactly the same views as Mr. Mavroyiannis regarding the past, such as what happened at the Crans Montana conference, there is a common understanding on what needs to be done from now onwards on the Cyprus problem.

Regarding the candidacy of DISY President Averof Neophytou, he pointed out that his problem is that he lacks support from Cyprus, even from his own people in ruling DISY party.
