Government election propaganda doesn’t change the realities citizens are experiencing

Statement by G.Loucaides, AKEL Parliamentary Representative

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th April 2021, Nicosia

The image portrayed in the government and paid DISY pre-election propaganda about the vaccinations, tests and the handling of the pandemic, doesnt change the realities that citizens are experiencing. Nor does it explain how Malta has double the vaccinations than Cyprus or that the United Kingdom, which had the biggest problem in Europe, has managed to record the best results today. The responsibilities for this negative comparison, both on an EU and national level, are obvious and self-evident.

We call on the government to:

  • Through the elaboration of a correct scheme and consultation where necessary, to at long last immediately effectively strengthen the public health infrastructures in staff, equipment and facilities, as well as to involve all private hospitals in confronting the third wave of the pandemic,
  • Continue the program of mass tests, turning it, however, primarily into self-control, as is the case in most countries, in order to avoid the suffering of the people and loss of significant useful time,
  • Look at a possible change in the method of setting an appointment for a vaccination, which in addition to the unacceptable technical problems observed, puts citizens in a humiliating competitive race. The experience of other European countries can and should also be used,
  • Look for ways to boost the quantities of immediately available vaccines and seek to restore public confidence in all vaccines, as more than 50% of immediately available vaccines belong to a specific company.
