Fire prevention and fire safety must be a top priority

11 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The fires that have broken out across Cyprus in recent days serve as a wake-up call for the authorities. The mere fact that nine incidents were identified within a few hours underscores the need for prevention and fire protection to be a top priority for the state, particularly within the context of the climate crisis and prolonged high temperatures

AKEL expresses its concern regarding Cyprus’s preparedness ahead of the new fire season, following the tragic events of last summer, and underlines that the protection of human life, property, and the natural environment demands planning, prevention and immediate action. The continuous clearing of dry vegetation, the strengthening of fire prevention measures, proper preparation, and adequate staffing of the relevant services are just some of the measures that must be implemented immediately.

Prevention, proper planning, and full operational readiness are key factors in protecting lives, property, and the natural environment.
