EU, US and NATO are exploiting the refugee crisis to promote their dangerous plans

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th February 2016, Nicosia

int prosfygesThe scheming and machinations of the Central and Eastern European EU Member State governments for the confinement and locking up of tens of thousands of refugees in Greece and the transformation of the country into a warehouse of human lives is unacceptable and condemnable. The stand of the EU in general towards the plight of the refugees from the war-stricken Middle East continues to be inhuman, but it is also at a dead-end. The EU, the US and NATO and the West in general, given that from the beginning they washed their hands with the blood of the peoples of the Middle East, are now washing their hands of the endless drama of the refugees. While they bear serious responsibilities for provoking the refugee crisis, not only are they not contributing to its solution, but are exploiting the crisis to justify the promotion of dangerous designs and plans as seen with the NATO presence in the Aegean Sea.

The families of refugees, if and when they manage to reach the territory of Europe, do not experience the overhyped European values of humanism and solidarity, but rather repression, fences, closed borders, police batons and indifference. In contrast however to all these previously mentioned we counter project and welcome the moving solidarity shown by the overwhelming majority of the Greek people to refugees arriving and crossing Greece.

AKEL stresses that all the EU Member States must assume a share of responsibility in the hosting of refugees and to establish human and dignified open living areas for the reception of refugees. In addition, they must at long last create legal and safe channels for refugees to apply for asylum. We reiterate, finally, that only the termination of the war and the foreign interventions in Syria can constitute a definitive solution.
