Environmentalists in practice – Proof of our action in the European Parliament
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2 May 2019, Nicosia
For AKEL, environmental issues have always been and will always be a top priority. Besides, this is evidenced by the analysis of the votes cast by Members of the European Parliament from across the European Union published last week by the Environmental NGO “Climate Action Network”. Halting the environmental degradation that threatens every corner of the Earth is a matter of utmost importance for us.
And this is proved in practice and in deeds, not just by the issuing of statements: The two AKEL MEP’s Neoklis Sylikiotis and Takis Hadjigeorgiou hold the highest rating from the group of Cypriot MEP’s with a 63% mark, as a result of which AKEL is placed in the category of “clear champions” of the environment.
Some of the other Cypriot MEP’s are classified as “delayers” and others in the “Dinosaurs” category (related data: https://bit.ly/2uXuR6r).
AKEL, as well as our Confederal Political Group in the European Parliament, GUE/NGL, know that there are many political and technological alternatives so that we can curb the threatened environmental crisis, but first and foremost political will is demanded to implement them, and AKEL has proved it can do so.
During the current five year term of the European Parliament, the AKEL Group in the European Parliament has been actively engaged in promoting numerous environmental issues. Wherever and whenever possible, AKEL has expressed and promoted its positions through interventions, the tabling of amendments and motions for resolutions have been put forward to promote policies for the protection of the environment.
