Data altered to discharge National Guard Colonel

AKEL on National Guard officer’s allegations

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 3rd March 2021, Nicosia

The allegations made by a National Guard Colonel about an alteration of data in order to discharge him prove that the government ruling forces are dismantling the National Guard to serve party and petty-political expediencies and considerations, devaluing its capable officers.

The allegations of the specific officer confirm the complaints made by AKEL, as well as many National Guard officers about non-meritocracy and the absence of an operational structure. It is characteristic that for the past two years the Anastasiades-DISY Government has been dragging its feet by hiding amendments to Army Regulations in its drawers which provide for measurable criteria on the assessment of officers, so that the promotion of the National Guard’s officers will be fair and unhindered.

AKEL calls on the government to at long last put an end to the mockery of thousands of army professionals, to respect the rulings of courts and to immediately promote the Regulations on promotions in Parliament for approval in order to reward the worthy and not the cronies.
