Cronyism/clientelism has serious consequences for the police force

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

7 February 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

In the past, the ruling DISY party was obsessively demanding resignations because one convict had escaped. Now that they have become a common occurrence – over the last six months alone, five escapes of prisoners from the hands of the police have been recorded – no one is moved to assume any responsibility. Now that murders and attempted murders are being organised even from within the Central Prison itself, the government and leadership of the Police Force remain silent and are hiding.

The dismantling of the police force due to the cronyism/clientelism system that DISY has entrenched has had serious consequences. Consequences with regards the state’s effectiveness to combat organised crime.
