Congratulatory letter of the General Secretary of AKEL to the President of the Turkish Cypriot ‘Turkish Republican Party’

7 September 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, today sent a letter of congratulations to the President of the Turkish Cypriot ‘Republican Turkish Party’ (CTP), Tufan Erhürman, on his re-election as President of the party. The letter is reproduced below:

“Dear Tufan,

On behalf of the Central Committee of AKEL, I warmly congratulate you on your re-election to the Presidency of the Republican Turkish Party. Your re-election comes at an extremely critical time for our country and for the future of the Turkish Cypriot community.

AKEL and CTP are linked by historical ties and struggles against partition and nationalism-chauvinism. They are linked by a common belief in the future of an independent, free and reunited Cyprus, by the commitment of our two parties to a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality as defined in the relevant Resolutions of the UN Security Council. In the current adverse conditions, our parties, but also all the progressive forces on the island, are called upon more than ever before to intensify our actions to stop the ideas for a “two-state solution” and other novel ideas that in fact lead to the perpetuation of the partitionist status quo. We are called upon to intensify our actions to resume the negotiations from where they were interrupted in 2017, on the basis of the convergences recorded and the Guterres Framework.

I am confident that together with the entire leadership and members of CTP you will continue to work tirelessly for the cause of reunification and peace in our country, for the ideas of social progress and democracy.

I look forward to holding a meeting with you as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Stefanos Stefanou

General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL”
