No compromise with the idea of a solution providing for half of Cyprus yet Greek
Statement by Aristos Damianou, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th August 2015, Nicosia
We understand the agonizing attempt by certain circles and forces to convince the Cypriot people that absolutely nothing has changed after Eroglu was replaced by Akinci. They probably expect that Turkey will adopt by magic the Greek Cypriot side’s positions and hence that’s how the Cyprus problem will be solved. Or else they are just continuing their attempt to kill the hope for a solution and with it the prospect of liberation and the peaceful reunification within the framework of a bi-communal, bi-zonal Federation.
Given that we as AKEL believe that the window of opportunity must be left open for a solution, but at the same time that the attempt to reach an agreed solution remains difficult, we will do what everything possible for the liberation from the occupation and partition, since AKEL does not compromise with the idea of a solution providing for half of Cyprus yet Greek.
In conclusion, we address an appeal to the leaders of both communities to focus more on the negotiation procedure and restrict public statements to the minimum, which every so often do not contribute constructively to the goal of the solution of the Cyprus problem.
